Moving to Charleston

What to Expect
When You Relocate

Relocating to Charleston is exciting — coastal living, incredible food, and a slower pace of life — but a few things might surprise you if you're new to South Carolina.

  1. 01
Property Taxes (A Pleasant Surprise) — SC has some of the lowest property taxes in the country. Apply for the 4% owner-occupied rate as a primary residence. I always walk my clients through this.
  2. 02
Car Taxes (Yes, It's a Thing) — SC charges an annual vehicle property tax. Pay the county first, then take your receipt to the DMV. It decreases each year as your car depreciates.
  3. 03
Getting Your SC Driver's License — Update within 45 days of moving. Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of address. Book an appointment to save time!
  4. 04
Registering Your Vehicle — Two steps: pay vehicle property tax with the county, then take your receipt to the DMV for SC plates. Different from most states but simple.
  5. 05
Flood Zones & Insurance — Charleston is coastal, so flood zones matter. Some areas require flood insurance — something I always help my clients navigate when choosing a home.
